Be kind to all around and serve one another; love to be just and true in all your dealings; pray always and so live your life that sorrow cannot touch you. Look upon the people of your own race and those of other races as members of one organism; sons of the same Father; let it be known by your behavior that you are indeed the people of God......

THIS IS FAITH

To walk where there is no path
To breathe where there is no air
To see where there is not light-
This is Faith.

To cry out in the silence,
The silence of the night,
And hearing no echo believe
And believe again and again-
This is Faith.

To hold pebbles and see jewels
To raise sticks and see forests
To smile with weeping eyes-
This is Faith.

To say: "God, I believe" when others deny,
"I hear" when there is no answer,
"I see" though naught is seen-
This is Faith.

And the fierce love in the heart,
The savage love that cries
Hidden Thou art yet there !
Veil Thy face and mute Thy tongue
yet I see and hear Thee, Love,
Beat me down to the bare earth,
Yet I rise and love Thee, Love !"
This is Faith.

Let's have some better lives lived than some better ones lost.

I don't want to get to the end of my life

and find that I lived just the length of it.

I want to have lived the width of it as well.

Diane Ackerman (1948-present)

quoted in Newsweek, September 22, 1986

There are many people in this country and in this

world who are just as intelligent, just as hard working and just

as deserving of success as you are. But for whatever reason,

maybe a broken home, maybe poverty, maybe just bad luck,

these people did not enjoy all of the opportunities that you have.

Progress is humankind's ability to view more

and more of our differences, whether of race or religion or culture

or gender. It is your responsibility as educated people to reject

these prejudices and to help close the gaps of justice and

opportunity that still divide our nation and our world.

You've had a wonderful opportunity to become educated people,

but what really matters is not what you have learned and not

what is said to you on this day, but what you do with all the

days ahead of you.

Secretary Condoleezza Rice Boston, Massachusetts
